MacMillan
Orkney Macmillan House is a four bedded inpatient unit along with a treatment room for ward attenders and day case treatments for mainly cancer patients at The Balfour.
The staff aim to provide an informal and comfortable environment, combined with up to date and evidence based treatment for patients with cancer. Practical advice and support are also extended to the patient's family and friends to allow them to cope with the effects of the illness. In close liaison with other disciplines, Macmillan aims to offer medical and nursing oncology and palliative care. This includes pain control, symptom management, blood transfusions and chemotherapy. Additional care includes lymphoedema management, palliative care and emotional support for the patient and the family.
Macmillan work closely with the Cancer Centre in Aberdeen, GPs and allied health professionals. The Oncology Nurses are part of the team and are a link between Macmillan and the community, where many patients are cared for in their own homes, receiving specialist pain and symptom control advice, emotional support and liaison with other agencies.
Our visiting times are open and we ask visitors to respect meal times and busy ward round times which generally occur in the mornings. We know there are occasions when people want to visit outside hospital opening hours, please speak to the nurse in charge if you need to visit at other times to arrange suitable access.
