Public Health
Overall, public health is concerned with protecting and improving the health of entire populations whilst reducing health inequalities. These populations can be as small as a local neighbourhood, or as big as an entire country or region of the world. The Public Health department of NHS Orkney is concerned with protecting and improving the health of the people of Orkney.
The department is located at The Balfour, Foreland Road, Kirkwall and is open Monday to Friday, 09.00 am to 17:00 pm.
Outwith these hours, a Public Health on-call service operates between 17:00 pm and 09.00 am on weekdays, and 24 hours a day at the weekends and public holidays. Specialist Public Health advice can be obtained by telephoning the main Balfour switchboard on 01856 888000 and asking for Public Health 1st on-call.

Healthy living
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Interestingly enough, health is not simply defined as just the absence of disease. The actual definition of Healthy Living is the steps, actions and strategies one puts in place to achieve optimum health.
Healthy Living is about taking responsibility and making smart health choices for today and for the future. Eating right, getting physically fit, emotional wellness, spiritual wellness and prevention are all apart of creating a healthy lifestyle. Since the entire YOU, meaning all aspects of one’s self, must work in harmony to achieve wellness, you need to put balanced energy into each aspect of yourself.
