High Dependency Unit (HDU)
The Balfour High Dependency Unit has 2 funded beds and a 3rd bed that can be used in emergencies for a limited period.
We admit approximately 280 patients per year. The complexity of those patients varies from level 1 patients, who require a slightly higher level of care and monitoring than can be delivered on the ward, right up to level 3 patients who require intensive care level support (This group of patients are generally stabilised on the unit then retrieved by the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) to Intensive care units in Aberdeen or Glasgow).
We have input from anaesthetists (who lead the medical care in the unit), medical and surgical doctors, physiotherapists, dieticians, speech therapists, radiographers and many more.
