Looking after our community and providing excellent care

Norovirus (winter vomiting bug)

Public Health and Environmental Health have been working with colleagues at Orkney Islands Council to investigate an increase in cases of diarrhoea and vomiting in several schools and nurseries in Orkney (although it is clear that this is also circulating in the community in general). Although the overall number of people affected is low it is higher than usual for the time of year.

Dr Derek Cox, Consultant in Public Health with NHS Orkney, said: “We know at this time of year Norovirus or “winter vomiting bug” may start circulating in the community. Norovirus can spread to others very easily so it is important that anyone who has diarrhoea or vomiting isolates themselves as far as is possible until 48 hours after the last episode. This essentially means staying at home during this 48 hour period, avoiding mixing with others at work, school, leisure and sporting activities, including at weekends.

“Washing your hands with warm water and soap, and cleaning surfaces with a bleach based product can help reduce the spread of infection.

“Although Norovirus can be unpleasant it usually clears up by itself in a few days. You can normally look after yourself or your child at home, and so should avoid going to your GP or to the hospital, where you might spread the bug to others. Obviously if you become concerned, this would be the time to contact your GP or NHS 24 (just dial 111)”
