NHS Orkney Fundraising Group - “Give a Little, Help a Lot”
As work continues apace on the new hospital and healthcare facility, the NHS Orkney “Give a Little, Help a Lot” fundraising group continues to do what they can to raise money in support of their vision, to cover the purchase of additional items which will enhance the patient and staff experience in the new build.
The group was established from within NHS Orkney’s staff when it was identified that the new hospital and healthcare facility funding would not cover the “luxury items”, items such as – sensory toys for the children’s waiting areas, homely furnishings for the relatives overnight bedroom and the interview/quiet rooms as well as the sitting room/dining areas, and furnishings which enhance the ambience of the sanctuary.
The group aren’t solely focused on the interior of the new building either; they have ambitious plans for the land surrounding it. These include developing and landscaping garden areas to include a rehabilitation garden space with a sensory garden area for dementia patients, a small wooded area, a children’s play area (suitable for all ages and all abilities) and rest area furnishings for those enjoying the outside air.
Julie Nicol, Chair of the Fundraising Group said: “The new building is going to be a state of the art facility but we wanted to think a bit more about the range of people who will be using this building. We feel by enhancing these spaces it will ensure staff, patients and relatives alike will be able to find a quiet and comfortable spot – inside or outside – to relax, reflect or rejuvenate.
“We’re aiming to raise a grand total of £50,000, (although more would be amazing!) and we want people across the county to join us. They can contribute their ideas, their time or their money; all will be very welcome. In particular we want children and young people to influence the design of their spaces. We’re also keen to involve a broad range of people in the design of the multifaith area/sanctuary area. To date we have been truly humbled by the donations we have received from businesses and community councils as well as the public who have come along to our fundraising events and supported us.”
