Donation to the Orkney Running Club from the Orkney Health Board (OHB) Endowments Fund
The OHB Endowments Fund were delighted to support the Orkney Running Club by covering the costs of their very first official parkrun on Saturday 21 April.Ian Kinniburgh, Chair of the Endowments Fund said “The more opportunities and greater the variety of activities we have in Orkney for people to get physically active the better.”
The parkrun is a free, weekly, 5km run which is open to all ages and all abilities. You can run, jog or walk and it encourages people to try running in a non competitive situation whilst enjoying the social aspect and support of other participants.
NHS Orkney’s Public Health Manager, Carol Stewart said “It's a well established fact that regular physical activity lowers the risk of many chronic conditions. It also considerably boosts self esteem, mood and sleep quality, while reducing the risk of stress and anxiety.”
Ian Sutcliffe from the Orkney Running Club added “The funds were used to purchase the timing equipment and other equipment needed to become an organised parkrun. We hope everyone enjoys Orkney’s first official park run and look forward to seeing many walkers and runners over the next few months.“
The parkrun will take place every Saturday morning at 0930 from the Picky Centre and you can find out more at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/kirkwall/
