Orkney Health Board Endowment Funds
The Orkney Health Board Endowment Funds are a registered Scottish charity (SCO16919) whose purpose is the advancement of health in Orkney, by bringing enhanced services to patients and staff in the local hospital and in the community.
Our vision is ‘a healthier future for the people of Orkney’, and our purpose is:
The advancement of health, through
Improvement in the physical and mental health of the Board’s population | Effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness |
Provision of services and facilities in connection to the above
Research into any matters relating to the causation, prevention, diagnosis or treatment of illness, or into such other matters relating to the health service as the Trustees see fit
Provision of education and development |
The Endowment Funds total around £1m, of which 90% is invested through our investment advisors Adam and Co. The remaining 10% represents specific funds held for individual departments and projects. Our investments generate income and capital growth which can be used to fund projects which support our overall purpose. Currently we set aside £50,000 every year and we are keen to increase the amount of money which we can make available each year for new and innovative projects.
Money comes in from donations and legacies from patients, their families, organisations and the wider community. NHS Orkney staff contribute to increasing income levels by organising fundraising activities.
Charitable income is managed separately from the money used to provide day to day NHS services. Donations and legacies are spent in line with the wishes of donors. Unrestricted income is targeted at where it is most needed.
Over the years, patients and staff have benefited significantly from this public generosity. The charity has been able to purchase specialist equipment, improve clinical facilities, fund staff travel scholarships and provide additional comforts and amenities.
Your donation could help to

- Purchase or update medical equipment
- Provide extra patient comforts especially for those in long-term care
- Give support to Volunteer Services
- Enhance the quality of the environment in health care through art and other media
- Support other health related projects in the community
May I specify how my donation is used?
If you so wish, without imposing any trust, you may specify your desire as to how you wish your donation to be used, and the Trustees will ensure that your donation is used for the purposes most in accordance with your wishes. However, the Trustees wish to draw to your attention the advantages and benefits of donations being made for the general purpose of the charity within Orkney and not for a specific purpose. In these cases, Trustees are able to use their discretion in expending such Endowment Funds on areas that do not attract donations but would benefit tremendously from such expenditure.
