Mouth Cancer Action Month - Blue Lips for Mouth Cancer Blue Wednesday 15 November 2017
November is Mouth Cancer Action Month. To encourage awareness of Mouth Cancer and raise awareness of the condition, NHS Orkney Public Dental Service will be joining in the national Blue Wednesday campaign on Wednesday 15th November 2017. Staff will be showing off their blue lips to help promote the key message of the campaign, and encourage everyone to be MOUTHAWARE.
If spotted early chances of a complete cure are much higher for anyone experiencing mouth cancer. It is essential that everyone is aware of any changes in the mouth and if anything is spotted, is it vital to get checked out immediately with a dentist or doctor.
Nigel Pendrey, Senior Dental Officer advised, “Anyone concerned about any changes in their mouth is encouraged to make an appointment and get it examined. No-one will think you are wasting their time if you want to get an area of concern in your mouth checked. Early detection is absolutely the key so if you are concerned please get checked out.”
You may already have noticed posters in various social venues around the county all bearing the message “BE MOUTH AWARE”, and many social media posts about Mouth Cancer Action Month. This is all part of the campaign, nationally and locally to broaden our understanding of the signs, symptoms and risk factors for mouth cancer.
If you want to get involved get your blue face paints or lipstick out and share your blue lip selfie with us. Send your pictures to ork-hb.oralhealth@nhs.net.
