Jean Stevenson
Dr Stevenson joined the NHS Orkney board in December 2023 as the Orkney Islands Council (OIC) representative. She has a broad clinical background as a registered nurse in medical/surgical wards, cardiovascular intensive care, care of the elderly, and as a midwife in labour ward. Subsequently, she worked in nurse education. A move to Sweden in 1990 led to a career change – teaching English language and medical English.
Her more recent career has strong links to healthcare, carrying out research in health-related information technology with a focus on patient safety. Her PhD thesis from the University of Sheffield is entitled “Documentation of Vital Signs in Electronic Health Records: A Patient Safety Issue”. She has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at various international conferences. In addition, she taught on a Master’s programme in eHealth.
Dr Stevenson returned to her native Orkney in 2020 and became an elected member of OIC in May 2022. She is a voting member of the Integration Joint Board (IJB) where she sits on the Performance and Audit Committee and the Joint Clinical and Care Governance Committee. She is also Vice Chair of Education, Leisure and Housing.
Meeting up with family from Orkney, Aberdeen and Sweden, catching up with friends, and wild swimming, are central to Jean’s free time.
